What never was places the player into the shoes of a young girl trying to piece together a strange puzzle after the death of her grandfather. There are a great many puzzles to be solved on this short but rewarding path. Inspired by Mist, Indiana Jones and H.P. Lovecraft (and a few others) the game mixes adventure and mystery together well in a fun and rewarding game. Players can explore the world around them and solve a neat little mystery along the way.
- Artistic. The game was made in an effort for the developer to maintain their 3D art skills and to learn visual scripting. Crafted in the Unreal Engine 4, the graphics are on par with many triple-A titles and really impressive.
- Voice Acting. The character that the player controls is voiced by Alice Rendell, who really brings the character to life and helps to immerse the player into the story. Voice acting I have found can make or break the player’s overall experience, and Alice did not disappoint at all.
- Fun. The most important factor when looking at a game is weather or not the player has fun playing it. It is a game after all, and games are supposed to be, if nothing else, fun. Too many games on the market today add nothing to the player’s enjoyment for the gaming experience. In this case however, What Never Was is a fun and pleasant experience from start to end.
- Length. While I can overlook this due to the the fact that the game is free combined with the great playing experience, I do with that it had lasted longer. The game is easy to fall in love with and when it ends, it leaves you wanting more. Perhaps that can even be listed as a Pro as it just illustrates how amazing the game is!
If you enjoy interesting puzzle games and adventure then you should give this game a try. I found it enjoyable and rewarding which is pretty cool for a game that was free! What Never Was is a breath of fresh untainted air in a toxic market full of polished turds and trash. The care that the developer put into the project shows through in the great user experience and I would recommend this true gem to anyone who asks. Pick it up no and let the fun begin!
