Hello and welcome to Jay’s Game Reviews! Today I am reviewing Möbler Development Team‘s self titled puzzle platformer game Möbler.

moble 1Möbler is a fun and fast paced puzzle platformer that sees players dodge falling objects and then jump onto said objects in order to climb higher. The higher the player climbs, the higher the player’s score climbs. Why is the player climbing though? Well there is a creature eating(?) the ground under foot and the longer you play the faster the pace seems to be. My best score was, well lets just say I won’t be getting on the leader board anytime soon, but I had a blast! It is recommended that players use a controller (wish I had known), but a keyboard is doable. Yes, there is a leader board over at the game’s website, so be sure to check and see if you made the cut!

Pros

  • Challenging. The game provides players with a unique and interesting challenge, to escape being eaten by climbing through a randomly generated obstacle coarse. As items are dropped into the game world, players must navigate through the environment finding a way to move upward for survival.
  • Visually appealing. A wonderfully rendered gaming world in which players move in an attempt to escape digestion. It is fun and well done, ’nuff said!
  • Fun Audio. The game’s music complements the events occurring on screen in a way to encourage players to move forward.
  • Cost. Hey, the game is free and that is always a huge selling point!

Cons

  • moble 2Limited Availability. The game is unfortunately only available to Steam players and thus; the folks on console and mobile are unable to experience this crazy fun game. This is such a shame because, the leader board gives players an excuse to keep coming back to improve their game and get better, in an attempt to rise through the ranks. I would love to see Steam players compete with X-Box, Playstation and Nintendo players; not to mention Android, IOS and Windows players. The immense competition that this would offer would be invaluable for players. This would help to improve the game’s replay-ability and draw in new players from many different platforms over time.

moble 3Möbler is a fun and fast paced puzzle platformer full of hours of entertainment. Players can challenge themselves to obtain a higher score by climbing higher throughout the game. There is a certain fulfillment that gamers get by seeing their name posted on a leader board, but even if they don’t reach that level, seeing how they compare with their pears is an amazing experience. The developers did an excellent job of randomizing the game’s drops to present the player with an adequate challenge.

Devotion [PC]

Available Platforms: None
Price: $16.99 [USD]
Reviewed on: PC
Genre: Indie Horror
Players: 1
Developer: Red Candle Games
Release date: Feb 19, 2019

Hello and welcome to Jay’s Game Reviews! Today I am reviewing Red Candle Game‘s Horror game Devotion.

devot 1

Devotion is an Indie Horror game by developer Red Candle Games, or at least, it was… The game features an Easter egg that mocked the Chinese president Xi Jinping. I’ll not go into details on the Easter egg or comment on my opinions of the response from the Chinese gaming community, but you can read more about the issue over on The Verge’s page where they discuss it at length and form your own opinion. I love politics in my games! Oh wait, I will talk about it, because censorship pisses me off! The fact that a game was pulled from the shelves because a political joke offended people is absolutely ridiculous, if this were standard practice, the number of games available would be drastically shorter! There are several alone that insult the current president of the United States, but you don’t see them pulled from the (virtual) shelves. It is a real sad state of affairs when a game is pulled because of censorship. This is a very bad omen of what is to come if this type of behavior is allowed to continue. My mind flashes to Fahrenheit 454 or Orwell’s 1984, and this my friends is a slippery slope indeed!

Pros

  • devout 2Great story. Devotion puts the player into the shoes of a man (I assume the husband/father) moving through an abandoned apartment in Taiwan trying to uncover the past.
  • Music. The soundtrack for the game fits the action perfectly, everything from the opening to the subtle nuances as the player moves through the game. I jumped out of my chair on more than one occasion due to perfectly placed audio cues and that was a pleasant surprise!
  • Atmosphere. The game moves around between different time periods and the surroundings change to reflect that. There is a dark and dingy feel for most of the game, but at other times everything is clean and pristine allowing the player to feel (complacently) safe.

Cons

  • Cry-babies. The game was pulled from the gaming market because people cried about a meme. Social Justice at it’s finest folks! I won’t dock the game points for this, but the Chinese gaming community get a 5/100 for acting like spoiled children.

devot 3

Devotion is a sensational game that I really enjoyed. It’s a shame that a group of assholes cried about an image and caused it to get pulled from Steam. Hopefully it will be back some day so that all you lovely people can play it too. I enjoyed the game and I know that if it had insulted my president, I would have laughed it off like every other insult that is lobbed at America these days. It is a shame that a bunch of cry-baby entitled brats can cause a fun and enjoyable game to be denied to the rest of the world. They should be ashamed of themselves. Hey, if they want to come after this article because I hurt their feels, more power to them, but I won’t remove it and I won’t apologize either.

Does this weeks game sound fun to you? Too bad you can’t play it! Sorry folks, I hadn’t realized the controversy over the game and it’s subsequent pulling from steam until after I played it. It really sucks and I do apologize for that.

Octopath Traveler [PC]

Available Platforms: Switch, PC
Price: $59.99 [USD]
Reviewed on: PC
Genre: RPG
Players: 1
Developer: Square Enix
Release date: June 7, 2019

Hello and welcome to Jay’s Game Reviews! Today I am reviewing Square Enix‘s RPG Octopath Traveler.

octo 1Octopath Traveler lets the player pick an adventure by allowing them to choose a character to start the game with. Each character has a different class and story to enjoy. The classes that the player can choose are: Apothecary, Cleric, Dancer, Hunter, Merchant, Scholar, Thief & Warrior. Each have strengths and weaknesses and each is a real blast to play! In addition, each character has several sub-jobs that the player can acquire for them. For instance, the Thief can choose Dancer, Merchant or Apothecary as a sub-job.

Pros

  • octo 2Great story. The game drops the player into an interesting world and allows them to pick a character to play with, each with their own unique back story.
  • Music. The game has a nice assortment of background music, as is standard with Square Enix’s games. Composer Yasunori Nishiki did a phenomenal job of scoring the game in a way that captures the essence of what makes classic RPGs great!
  • Characters. As mentioned before, the game allows the player to choose one of eight characters and each has a unique and interesting story and personality.
  • Art. The game uses classic RPG style graphics, but still uses some amazing artwork (See that awesome snake?) combining the two flawlessly.

Cons

  • I really couldn’t find anything to complain about with this week’s title!

octo 3Octopath Traveler is a fun story-driven role player that immerses the player into an interesting world. As a fan of RPG style games, specifically the retro (NES/SNES) style, I found it to be an excellent purchase as Steam was having a sale on it. I really enjoyed my time with the game and recommend it to anyone who likes classic RPGs.

Fade to Silence [PC] Redo

Price: $39.99 [USD]
Reviewed on: PC
Genre: Survival, RPG, Horror, Adventure
Players: 1
Developer: Black Forest Games
Release date: Apr 30, 2019

Hello and welcome to Jay’s Game Reviews! Today I am reviewing Black Forest Games‘ Horror RPG Fade to Silence again!

fade1Okay folks, last week I reviewed this game and did not really give it the justice that it deserved. I have since played it A LOT and I have to say that I am really enjoying myself. I felt that in light of the fact that my opinion of the game has changed, that I would be doing you, the constant reader, a disservice by not re-reviewing it. While my first review was honest and genuine, part of being a human is having the ability to change your opinion on something, and in this case I did.

Pros

  • fade2Great story. The game has an interesting story where the protagonist Ash is caught in an endless loop of torment, being resurrected (more powerful each time) again and again. These resurrections appear to be caused my a crack/tear in the space-time continuum. This, to me explains why the game’s intro scene is the same as the re-spawn sequence. It is upon second look, a really ingenious way to explain extra lives.
  • Pretty game world. The world that the characters live in is well built and while cold and uninviting, still quite beautiful! There is a lot to explore and plenty to do as well, so get out there and explore! My opinion here did not change. This gaming would is cold and hostile, but very nice to look at.
  • Interesting but simple game mechanics. The player uses the left and right mouse buttons to attack and power attack, using these two buttons you can almost perform combo attacks. Combine this with the combat roll in order to quickly evade enemy attacks and you can complete some fun battles. There is also a block key that I did not know about and becoming familiar with how each move works is the key to successful battles.
  • Crafting system. The crafting system allows the player to create some basic items, in order to gain better weapons, tools and items the player must recruit followers and gain their trust in order to gain better goods.
  • Monsters. The monsters in this game can be quite a challenge and each one has a way to best fight in order to be the most successful. Knowing your enemy is a key to getting through the game.
  • Exploration. The game has a massive world to explore and the player can get really into just exploring!

Cons

  • fade3Graphics. The graphics of the game feel out dated. The game world looks nice, but the characters and monsters just feel lazy and sub-par. I’ve never been one to care about game graphics, but when there is a cost to the game, the quality of graphics should reflect that. My opinion here has not changed.
  • Voice acting. While not terrible, the voice acting feels forced. There is a lack of emotion in the acting that shows through which is very unfortunate as the story seems solid. There is also an issue in the programming where character’s have no breaks in speech between their lines. There should be a wait for seconds line of code added to add a break into the audio in my opinion.

Tips

  • Know your enemy! You need to know how best to fight or you will not last very long. Look up battle strategies online or experiment for yourself.
  • Unlock every resource you find! Unlocking hunting grounds, forests and mining points is the key to successfully gaining the trust of your followers, so if you see a resource area, make sure you unlock it.
  • Loot and explore everything! Gaining loot will allow you to craft the items that you need for your survival, don’t be afraid to run back and drop off items in your stash if needed!
  • Don’t fear death! Yeah, it really sucks starting over, but the circle of torment allows players to use the Sliver of Hope items that they get when taking over an outpost to start more powerful. The player can also gather shards that help with temperature, hunger, endurance and health and those all carry over as well.
  • Hold off on followers! Wait to gather a follower for the area until you have cleared the out post and fully explored the area. Since followers consume resources, I have found that waiting as long as possible to recruit them helps to save on resources until you can find new ones in the next zone. Be aware though, that in zone 3 you will need tier 2 tools and bow in order to collect/unlock resources and tier 3 shortly there after.

Fade to Silence is a really fun and immersing experience that can pull the player in for hours. While the voice acting is not the best and character models look out dated, the game is too much fun to pass up. You can even add a friend who can control one of your followers and help you with resource gathering. It is very interesting and worth (in my opinion) the $39.99 price tag.

Hello and welcome to Jay’s Game Reviews! Today I am reviewing Black Forest Games‘ Horror RPG Fade to Silence.

fade1Fade to Silence is an interesting horror style role playing game from developer Black Forest Games. The game allows the player to explore a fun world and explore while building a community of NPC’s and fighting an assortment of creatures. The game introduces the player to a harsh and unforgiving world that is full of both danger and treasure around every corner with interesting characters to meet along the way.

Pros

  • fade2Good story. The game has an interesting story for the most part. Aside from any type of opening to introduce the player to the world, the story is enough to hold your attention.
  • Pretty game world. The world that the characters live in is well built and while cold and uninviting, still quite beautiful! There is a lot to explore and plenty to do as well, so get out there and explore!
  • Interesting but simple game mechanics. The player uses the left and right mouse buttons to attack and power attack, using these two buttons you can almost perform combo attacks. Combine this with the combat roll in order to quickly evade enemy attacks and you can complete some fun battles.
  • Crafting system. While I have not had the opportunity to fully explore this aspect of the game, from what I have seen, it seems like a simple way to get needed items.

Cons

  • fade3Graphics. The graphics of the game feel out dated. The game world looks nice, but the characters and monsters just feel lazy and sub-par. I’ve never been one to care about game graphics, but when there is a cost to the game, the quality of graphics should reflect that.
  • Voice acting. While not terrible, the voice acting feels forced. There is a lack of emotion in the acting that shows through which is very unfortunate as the story seems solid.
  • Lack of direction. The player starts the game being resurrected and kind of thrown into the mix. While this isn’t too bad, when the player dies they are treated to the same cut scene. It feels like the design team forgot to add an opening to the game to introduce players to the world and so they just recycled the respawn scene instead.

On one hand Fade to Silence is fun and entertaining which is what you want in a game; on the other hand the game provides little direction to the player. The price tag would lead you to believe that the graphics and voice acting should be better, but then one remembers that Bethesda has been releasing overpriced crap for years. Overall, I would say that the story and general enjoyment of playing the game far out weigh what it lacks and so the $39.99 price is not too terrible.

What Never Was [PC]

bott3Game: What Never Was
Available Platforms: Steam, Apple, Linux
Price: Free
Reviewed on: PC
Genre: Puzzle, Adventure
Players: 1
Developer: Acke Hallgren
Release date: Jan 11, 2019

Hello and welcome to Jay’s Game Reviews! Today I am reviewing Acke Hallgren‘s puzzle game What Never Was.

1What never was places the player into the shoes of a young girl trying to piece together a strange puzzle after the death of her grandfather. There are a great many puzzles to be solved on this short but rewarding path. Inspired by Mist, Indiana Jones and H.P. Lovecraft (and a few others) the game mixes adventure and mystery together well in a fun and rewarding game. Players can explore the world around them and solve a neat little mystery along the way.

Pros

  • 3Artistic. The game was made in an effort for the developer to maintain their 3D art skills and to learn visual scripting. Crafted in the Unreal Engine 4, the graphics are on par with many triple-A titles and really impressive.
  • Voice Acting. The character that the player controls is voiced by Alice Rendell, who really brings the character to life and helps to immerse the player into the story. Voice acting I have found can make or break the player’s overall experience, and Alice did not disappoint at all.
  • Fun. The most important factor when looking at a game is weather or not the player has fun playing it. It is a game after all, and games are supposed to be, if nothing else, fun. Too many games on the market today add nothing to the player’s enjoyment for the gaming experience. In this case however, What Never Was is a fun and pleasant experience from start to end.

Cons

  • 2Length. While I can overlook this due to the the fact that the game is free combined with the great playing experience, I do with that it had lasted longer. The game is easy to fall in love with and when it ends, it leaves you wanting more. Perhaps that can even be listed as a Pro as it just illustrates how amazing the game is!

If you enjoy interesting puzzle games and adventure then you should give this game a try. I found it enjoyable and rewarding which is pretty cool for a game that was free! What Never Was is a breath of fresh untainted air in a toxic market full of polished turds and trash. The care that the developer put into the project shows through in the great user experience and I would recommend this true gem to anyone who asks. Pick it up no and let the fun begin!

Hand Simulator [PC]

hand logoGame: Hand Simulator
Available Platforms: Steam
Price: $1.99 USD (on sale for $0.59 USD)
Reviewed on: PC
Genre: Simulation
Players: 1, Online multiplayer
Developer: HFM Games
Release date: July 18, 2017

Hello and welcome to Jay’s Game Reviews! Today I am reviewing HFM game‘s simulation game Hand Simulator.

hand 1Hand Simulator is a couple of years old, but I just found it on Steam and figured I’d give it a shot as it has very positive reviews. Players use the keyboard to control fingers and use the mouse to move around in this simulation game. Use you hand to perform various mundane tasks such as load and fire weapons, use a sparkler and spin a fidget spinner. There are several levels to chose from, each with their own tasks and challenges.

Pros

  • hand 2Challenging. The game is maddening in it’s difficulty. The tasks are all simple enough, but the real challenge is in performing the tasks with the controls and the game mechanics. This makes the simple task of picking up an item a long drug out process that causes great frustration, but makes it very rewarding when you are able to complete a goal.

Cons

  • hand 3Controls. The controls in this game are what makes it challenging, that being said, there are so many times when you will do exactly what you should do in order to achieve an objective, but the controls fail you and the item you were trying to manipulate ends up on the floor.
  • Physics. The game’s physics are another obstacle that will cause the player to rage quit often! For example: There is a level called Milkmaid where you need to milk a cow. I was able to milk the cow, but because I brushed up against my bucket, it flew away and I was unable to get the achievement for milking the bovine.
  • Graphics. Very poor low quality graphics, but I can overlook this as it does add to the game’s charm somewhat.

I found this game to be frustrating and annoying and did not enjoy it aside from the laughs that I got when watching back my footage. I may try playing again sometime, but for now, I’d rather rub my face against a cheese grater.

Hello and welcome to Jay’s Game Reviews! Today I am reviewing True Nightmare‘s Indie adventure game Tornado!.

torn 1Battle birds and dodge nature as you try to gun down the Tornado! in this fun and addicting rail-shooter style game from Indie studio True Nightmare. Players navigate a paper airplane that was thrown by a child with a crazy and wild imagination into a hellscape of birds, rocks, trees the evil Tornado! and many other items. Collect power-ups along the way and pick up ammo to fire at the wind demon himself. Will you have what it takes to destroy the weather giant, or will you crash and burn?

Pros

  • torn 2Challenging. There are so many obstacles to run into that you will have a tough time reaching the Tornado!, but once you do you’ll need to keep picking up ammo and firing into the twister until it’s health(?) has been depleted.
  • Arcade-style. This game uses something that I always loved as a kid going into the dark arcade with a bag of quarters ready to loose myself in the blue-glow of the gaming world. High scores! You rack up points the longer you fly, the more you shoot and the longer you survive.
  • Music. The game features a nice up-beat tune that will keep the player feeling like they are on an adventure.
  • Cute cartoony-like graphics. The came feels like flying through a coloring book, very enjoyable!
  • Pricing. Third week in a row that I’m bringing you guys a free game, noticing a pattern? This game is a load of fun for being free, and so definitely a good find!

Cons

  • torn 3Lack of instruction. It took me several tries to figure out what I needed to do, I did not get that I needed to shoot the Tornado! until like the 5th time playing. I also did not realize that the player can fire a standard weapon with the left mouse button until I looked at the “Help” section within the game.
  • Controls. Up is up and down is down and that kept throwing me off in a flying game. This can be changed in the options, but I feel like it should have been the default.

For the most part, I really loved this game, it is fun, challenging and free. I do have a couple of minor complaints, but nothing that can’t be overlooked. I think that anyone who plays the game should look at the options and help menus before starting, just to get an idea of what they can do.

Hello and welcome to Jay’s Game Reviews! Today I am reviewing REMIMORY‘s Indie puzzle platformer Color Symphony.

color 1Color Symphony is a unique and fun puzzle platformer that gives players control of the color spectrum. Players can alter the background color of the level making enemies and spikes disappear as well as making platforms and exit doors appear. It is not an overly complex system and can be learned and mastered relatively fast. Each stage has puzzles that get progressively more difficult as you progress keeping the game fresh and interesting as you play.

Pros

  • color 2Challenging. The came offers players unique challenges that are solved by altering the background color of the stage to make objects appear or disappear. this was a fun and interesting gaming mechanic that I found quite enjoyable.
  • Pricing. Just like last weeks game, this week I am bringing you a free game that you can pick up right now. There is a $9.99 sequel that you can pick up if you enjoyed the first one and would like to see what else is offered too.

Cons

color 3

  • Controls don’t always respond. It could have just been user error, but many times when I pressed the buttons that were needed to solve the puzzle, nothing happened.
  • Music volume. I was distracted by the music more than the enemies and even after lowering the music in came and lowering the games volume to 1 in my audio mixer, it was still way too loud.

I found Color Symphony to be a lot of fun with enough challenge to not become boring or stale. It was a nice change of pace from the type of game that I typically play, and it was good to see such a fine product from this lesser known gaming studio. I recommend the game, and as it is free on Steam, I suggest you at least try it out for yourself.

Cowpocalypse [PC]

cow logoGame: Cowpocalypse
Available Platforms: Steam
Price: Free
Reviewed on: PC
Genre: Adventure, Sci-Fi
Players: 1
Developer: Balazs Hrabacsik
Release date: May 29, 2019

Hello and welcome to Jay’s Game Reviews! Today I am reviewing Balazs Hrabacsik‘s Indie Sci-Fi game Cowpocalypse.

cow 1Cowpocalypse (Episode 1) is a free game demo on the Steam store that drops the player into a silly but very scary (jk) world that is full of strange and terrifying beings (also jk). Right from the start the player is confronted with a choice. A seemingly simple choice: Red or Blue? Left or Right? Does it even matter? Is it all that matters? You’ll have to play and find out (or watch the video at the end of the review), but be warned: What lies ahead might shock you!

Pros

  • cow 2Fun Story. The game has a very interesting premise, it has a crocks and sunglasses wearing, vodka drinking, Russian Santa Clause, and a fun little mystery to solve. What more do you want?
  • Easy controls. Basically a simple point and click game, it is fairly intuitive.
  • Real meets silly. The game uses real world images and graphical images and presents them in a strange and silly way. For instance, the player uses a knife to cut a bed-sheet into a rope. While doing this the player finds an old dirty sock that could be used as a weapon against a bear. Simple things like this are used to entertain the player and lighten the mood of the game, giving it a comical feel.
  • That price tho. Hey, what’s better than a free game? A free game that is also fun and entertaining! That is exactly what you get with Cowpocalypse, and I couldn’t be happier!

Cons

  • Poor translations. While charming at first, the poor translation to English can become annoying very quickly. While it is always appreciated that any developer goes through the trouble to translate their game into a language that is not their native tongue, I think that getting someone to read the translation correctly should be important when doing this, otherwise, why even bother?
  • Controls don’t always respond. While easy to figure out, the controls don’t always seem to work. Several times when I clicked something my character just stood there. I found that if I clicked the ground to start him walking and then clicked on what I wanted to interact with that I could get him to respond. A little bit of a hassle.

cow 3I enjoyed episode 1 of Cowpocalypse and look forward to what else the series has to offer. I think that this game has the potential to become a cult classic of sorts if it is handled just right, and I really hope that it does as well as I think it can. I would love to see the game really take off and perhaps spawn sequels that explain more of the world and delve into the lore around it, those types of games I think, really stick with the player for years to come!
